How to Red Out Tail Lights

One way car lovers add to the visual aesthetics of their car's exterior is to red out the tail lights. Redding out the tail lights creates a smooth, uniform and stylish band of color when your tail lights are illuminated. Even though tinting your tail lights is safe and legal in most states as long as your tail lights can be seen from 1,000 feet, always check your local laws before applying tinting.

  • Paper towels
  • Red transparent adhesive film
  • Spray bottle
  • Dish soap
  • Credit card
  • Blow dryer

Instructions

      Clean the tail-light area with glass cleaner and paper towels.

      Hold a sheet of transparent red film up to the light and cut it with scissors so it is slightly larger that the tail-light area.

      Mix a few drops of dishwashing soap and water in a spray bottle. Mix or shake the solution. Spray the tail lights evenly and generously with the soapy water.

      Take the backing off of a sheet of transparent red film to reveal the sticky side. Stick it onto the tail lights.

      Smooth out the red film and squeegee out the soapy water with a credit card or something similar. Start at the center and work towards the edges. If you accidentally get some wrinkles, a blow dryer can be used to soften the vinyl and smooth out the wrinkles.

      Trace carefully around the inside edge of the tail light trim with a hobby knife to score it. Peel off the excess film.
