How to Copy VMs to Other Machines With VMware

One of the key strengths of VMware computer virtualization software is its versatility. Because all of the files needed to run a virtual machine are stored in a single folder, they can quickly be moved to another computer, allowing you to quickly load your virtual machine and begin working from any computer. Locate your virtual machine files and move them to a memory card or external hard drive to use them on another computer that has VMware installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch VMware Player. Right-click on the virtual machine that you would like to move, and click "Edit VM."

    • 2

Click the "Options" tab, and find the box labeled "Working directory." This is the folder on your computer where the files used by the virtual machine are stored.

    • 3

Browse to the folder that you found in Step 2. Approximately 8 files will be in the folder: a large one, representing the virtual machine's hard drive, and several small files with configuration data and logs.

    • 4

Copy all of the files in the folder to a folder on a removable storage device such as an external hard drive, and move the device to the computer that you wish to use the virtual machine on. Copy the folder to the computer, or leave it on the storage device.

    • 5

Launch VMware Player on the computer that the virtual machine has been moved to.

    • 6

Click "Open a Virtual Machine." Browse to the folder where the virtual machine is saved, and double click the file with the .VMX extension. The virtual machine will appear on the list in VMware Player.

    • 7

Double click the virtual machine to begin using it.
