How to Put the Camera Pics on the Computer With a Memory Stick

Many digital cameras and camera phones are only equipped to hold up to a gigabyte of information. So if you like to snap away it's important to transfer your photos to a hard drive with more space regularly. You can transfer your digital pictures to your computer using a memory stick. A memory stick, a variety of a memory card, is a tiny rectangular disk that can be inserted into a camera to save photos and other data, then removed to use for a file transfer to your PC.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your memory stick into the corresponding slot on your digital camera (you may have to insert it into a memory stick adapter first depending on your camera model).

    • 2

Turn on the camera and go to your "Settings," "Preferences," or "Options." Under the "Memory" setting make sure you choose the option to save all of your pictures to the memory stick.

    • 3

Take your photos. When you're finished and ready to load the images onto your computer, shut the camera down and remove the memory stick.

    • 4

Place the memory stick into a card reader. This is a small USB-compatible tool that has a slot to hold the memory stick (as well as the adapter in some cases). Make sure that the card reader is compatible with your memory stick's size.

    • 5

Turn on your computer and plug the memory reader into the USB slot. Your computer will automatically recognize the new hardware. If prompted, install any plug-ins or drivers that are required to view the contents of the memory card. You may have to navigate to your "My Computer" folder (located on the "Start" menu or desktop) and look under the "Devices with Removable Storage" area for the card.

    • 6

Wait for the folder containing your image files to pop up onscreen automatically. You may have to navigate through a few more folders (titled "Media" or something similar) to find your library of photos.

    • 7

Create a new folder on your computer to hold the pictures from your digital camera. Cut and paste (or drag and drop) the photos to this folder. Depending on how many photos you have and the size of each one, this could take a few minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compress the photos to a Zip or Stuffit file to save space on your computer. Delete any unwanted photos from the drive immediately.
