How to Find a City Zip Code

Gone are the days of standing in line at the post office to look up zip codes in "The Zip Code Directory." In fact, that directory no longer exists in book form since there are quicker and more efficient ways to search for city zip codes, as long as you have a computer and Internet access. The following steps will show you different ways to find a city zip code if all you have is the name of the city or a mailing address.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a local phone book directory. Most phone books have zip codes listed in their Services sections under the headings "[Name of State] Zip Codes" and "[Name of City] Zip Codes." The state page details mostly small to medium cities' single zip codes; however, larger cities with multiple zip codes may indicate a blank area or contain an asterisk because there are too many zip codes to list. See Step 3 for finding multiple zip codes within a city.

Go to the United States Postal Service (USPS) website. Click on the "Zip Code Lookup" page, and choose the "Search By City" option (the second tab). Type the name of the city and state to find a zip code in that particular city, then click "Submit." This method will list all the zip codes within that city.

    • 3

Choose the "Search By Address" option (the first tab) to find the correct zip code within a city's multiple zip code listing. Enter the address, city and state to which the item is being mailed, and click "Submit." The full address in standard format including the nine-digit (ZIP+4) zip code will appear.

Conduct an Internet search by using any number of search engines. Type the city name and the words "zip code," surrounded by quotes, in the search box. An example of this is "Walla Walla WA zip code." The name of the city with its zip code will appear within the search results.
