How to Start an Old Chevy Truck

Before fuel injection, electronic control units and catalytic converters, trucks had much simpler engines. Back then, getting a truck to run correctly meant almost daily tune-ups, depending on the temperature and atmospheric conditions. Starting a truck on a cold day was even more difficult and frustrating at times. If you own an old Chevy truck and need to get it started, a few tips and tricks will make the job a little bit easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the driver's seat, and put your foot on the accelerator pedal. Pump the accelerator pedal three times, holding down the pedal for a second at a time. This will put fuel in the carburetor and get the truck started easier.

    • 2

Place the key in the ignition, and turn it to the "On" position. Wait three to five seconds.

    • 3

Turn the key all the way to the "Ignition" position while holding the accelerator pedal about halfway down. Keep turning the key, pumping the gas occasionally, until the engine turns over and fires.

    • 4

Allow the engine to run for at least five minutes before you drive off. You may need to pump the accelerator a bit until the motor warms up and allows the engine to idle normally.
