Things You'll Need

  • Fabric

  • Measuring tape

  • Scissors

  • Straight pins

  • Needle and thread or no-sew fabric glue

  • Pillow form or throw pillow

Throw pillows add color and comfort to your home decor scheme. If you want to change up your decorating style without buying all new furniture, make your own throw pillows with only basic hand-sewing knowledge (or try a no-sew variety for an even easier craft). Use any fabric and an existing throw pillow or pillow form to create your own throw pillows in an afternoon.

Step 1

Measure your fabric to be 1 inch taller and wider than your throw pillow or pillow form. Cut two pieces of fabric to match this measurement and place the fabric pieces with the right sides (outside) facing. Pin together around all sides, approximately 3/4 inch in from the edges.

Step 2

Sew a hem around three of the four edges, using a needle and thread and a backstitch. Make your hem 1/2 inch in from the edge of every side. If you are not handy with a needle and thread, use no-sew fabric glue to make your hem instead.

Step 3

Turn your pillow fabric right-side-out and put the pillow or pillow form inside it. Now fold in the edges of the unhemmed edge and hand-stitch or glue together to finish the pillow.

Tip

Make a foldover flap on one side and create button holes or a Velcro closure so you can reuse the pillow inside with new covers whenever the mood strikes you.
