How to Write for a Government Energy Grant

Grant proposals, often referred to simply as grants, are used to secure funding from organizations who wish to support development in a specific area. Currently, breakthroughs in energy research are an important concern for national and state governments, and funding is plentiful. When writing a proposal for a government energy grant, keep in mind that the competition for funding is strong, and your grant will need to be well written, concise and compelling in order to stand out from the crowd.

Instructions

Cover all bases. Government energy grants often go through many channels and involve a considerable amount of protocol; to ensure that your grant proposal stands up to the scrutiny, be sure to to read all directions on the application and follow each guideline for the individual grant. Before you begin the grant-writing process, print a copy of the instructions and highlight each requirement so that you can check each off as it is completed.

    • 2

Begin with a project abstract. The abstract provides a brief overview of the entire project; by reading it, the reviewer should have a basic understanding of the problem, the solution and the end goal. Within the word limitations set out by the government institution, lay out what you plan to do, the importance of your energy research, the research that has already been completed and your plan for achieving the goals. A carefully crafted abstract is particularly important for government energy grants, because the field is flooded with researchers hoping to find the next big technology breakthrough to solve the world's energy issues.

Include an organizational introduction. In this section, you should describe your organization and explain the work you have done in the energy field or supporting areas to build credibility. Include the names and biographies of the board of directors and key people that will be involved in the energy grant; in each biography, demonstrate the individual's experience in energy research and development to create confidence in the team's ability. To convince the government grant board that your team is qualified, consider adding a list of energy-related projects you have completed, placing special emphasis on projects that were supported by other governmental bodies.

    • 4

Write a statement of need. This section, also called the problem statement, should convince the grant reviewers that there is a need for a solution to your particular area of energy research. It should also convince the reader that a solution is realistic and can be completed within the limits of the grant funding. Energy is a major issue for government, and grant reviewers are bombarded with information and unrealistic solutions; use specific facts and reliable statistics to make a compelling case for your project. Emphasize the importance at all levels, and target your anecdotes and statements to the particular interest of the granting institution.

    • 5

Lay out goals and objectives. Once you have established the importance of a solution to your energy-related problem, you must convince the reviewers that you have a realistic, achievable plan of action. List the specific goals and measurable outcomes of the project, focusing on the advancement of energy research. Then, create a step-by-step plan that will allow you to achieve those goals, and include detailed descriptions of each step. Keep in mind that energy research is evolving quickly, and explain how your methods are timely and more effective than current efforts.

Close out the proposal with an evaluation section. Because the end result of government energy funding can be high-profile, grants must provide criteria that will be used to evaluate the success of the completed project. How will you measure the impact on nationwide energy research? What problems will your project solve? In this section, explain how you will measure the achievement of your listed goals and objectives.
