How to Test CPU Speed

A CPU or "Central Processing Unit" is a major part of the computer. It is the core foundation of the computer by processing most of the data flow. Without a CPU, the PC cannot function or even boot. The speed of the CPU is important for playing games, watching movies or even surfing the Internet. You can use CPU Speed Professional (Free) or CPU TrueSpeed (Free) to test your CPU speed.

Instructions

  1. CPU Speed Professional

    • 1

Select the "Start" menu and "All Programs" tab. Click on the "CPU Speed Professional" and press the "CPU Speed Pro" tab.

    • 2

Click the "Test CPU Speed" button on the left. The MHz speedometer runs first and then the percent CPU speedometer runs. On the bottom of the screen, a process bar is visible.

    • 3

Wait roughly 1 minute to test the CPU. The time the process takes depends on the speed. A box will appear when the test finishes that shows the CPU speed. Click "Submit My Score" to add your speed to the worldwide list of CPU speeds, or press "Close" to exit.

    CPU TrueSpeed

    • 4

Press the "Start" menu icon. Select the "All Program" tab, and scroll to "CPU TrueSpeed." Move the mouse cursor over to the pop up box, and select "CPU TrueSpeed."

    • 5

Click "More" in the small box that appears. Change the "Calibration Thread Priority" to "Highest." Press the up arrow on "Time Interval" to "5." Adjust the "Output Precision" by sliding the bar all the way to the right.

    • 6

Select the box next to "Timer." Press the "Refresh" button. The CPU speed displays next to "CPU Clock," such as "CPU Clock: 2600.12008 MHz."

Tips & Warnings

  • Install the program after you download it. Double-click on the file in your specific download folder. The download folder may vary by browsers. Follow the on-screen instructions, which mainly consist of clicking "Next."

  • CPU TrueSpeed tests your CPU and monitors in real time. Leave the program up in the background for continual surveying.
