How to Change an Ebook Format to Put on a Kindle

Amazon's Kindle is an electronic book (ebook) reader that offers features that are likely to appeal to both dedicated hard-copy readers and to those who have already accumulated a library of ebooks. With the Kindle's electronic paper display, the ability to annotate, and the ability to shop for and download ebooks from anywhere in the wireless network, many consumers are considering converting. You may not, however, want to be limited to Amazon's selection of ebooks.

Instructions

  1. Freeware Options

    • 1

Download AutoKindle eBook Converter 0.4.50 (AKeC) from Cnet. AKeC is a free program that allows you to convert PDF, HTML, LIT, CHM, and PDB files to MOBI, a file format that is compatible with Kindle.

    • 2

Open AKeC by left clicking on the icon on your desktop.

    • 3

Select the file you'd like to convert. A window will appear that allows you to browse and locate your file. For example, if you'd like to convert a book entitled "The Magical World of Lima Beans" that you have stored in a folder called "Must Read Books," you'll left click on "Must Read Books" and then left click again on "The Magical World of Lima Beans."

    • 4

Choose your destination folder. This is where you keep newly converted files. The program will automatically complete conversion.

    • 5

Connect your Kindle to your computer via a USB cable to transfer the new file to the Kindle.

    • 6

Find your converted file in your destination file and move it into the "documents" file of the Kindle. When the file has uploaded, disconnect the Kindle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Amazon offers document conversion but you may run into copyright limitations and fees in some cases. You can email your non-copyright protected document to your Kindle email account. Kindle will convert non-copyrighted material for free and mail it back to you.

  • You can also convert through the Manage Your Kindle Page on Amazon. Kindle converts your documents for a fee and returns them to you wirelessly.
