How to Attach a Trekking Pole to a Pack

Trekking poles are great tools for hiking and backpacking. There might be times when you need to add your pole to your backpack load. Your pack should always be comfortable and loaded correctly to prevent strain on your back. Gear you carry externally can affect your balance, which means attaching your poles should be done carefully and securely.

Instructions

    • 1

Retract your trekking pole by adjusting its sections.

    • 2

Load your trekking pole externally by lashing it vertically behind your pack's compression straps. You can place it on either side of the pack. If necessary, arrange the other items you carry outside the pack to keep them balance on both sides.

    • 3

Make sure all the compression straps are out and holding the pole in securely.

    • 4

Tuck your trekking pole's ends securely into your pack's pocket at the bottom. Secure any other equipment you lashed outside your pack so it doesn't swing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Minimize the number of items you strap to the outside of your pack. These items should be your pointy gears such as a trekking pole or ice axe.

  • The weight of your loaded back pack should not exceed 25 percent to 30 percent of your body weight.
