How to Adjust BMW Headlights

The headlights on a BMW are adjustable in case you need to move the headlight beam. A vehicle accident or replacement of the headlight assembly are two instances where adjustment might be necessary. Fortunately, adjusting the headlights is possible with a simple screwdriver. This job should take you roughly 20 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the BMW's hood and locate the headlight adjustment screws on the top and the inside edge (towards the center of the vehicle) of the headlight.

    • 2

      Turn the headlights on.

    • 3

Turn the adjustment screw on the top of the headlight to adjust the vertical pitch of the housing and the headlight beam. Turning the screw clockwise will raise the beam; turning the screw counterclockwise will lower the beam.

    • 4

Turn the screw on the inside edge of the headlight to adjust the headlights horizontally. Turn the screw clockwise to adjust the headlight beam to the right (as you are facing the headlight) or counterclockwise to adjust the beam to the left.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adjust the BMW's headlight beam so that the headlights shine below the eye level of oncoming traffic for most passenger vehicles. Make sure the horizontal adjustment favors the right for both headlights without compromising your ability to see the road.

  • For specific information about your BMW vehicle headlight adjustment features (for your model year), consult the particular vehicle's manual (see "References").
