How to Install Side Steps on a Jeep Wrangler
While the Jeep Wrangler is offered from the factory with side steps, they're not standard on every model. The mounting holes are included in the frame on all Jeep Wranglers, but if yours did not come with the steps, you will need to purchase and install them. They are easy to put on the Jeep, and require only a few tools. If you have a Jeep without steps and want to add them, follow the steps here to complete the job.

1
Locate the holes in the frame of the Jeep where the bolts attach to secure the steps. These are located directly below the doors in the side of the frame rail, and are accompanied by slots for the mounting tabs on the steps to engage.
-
2
Align the mounting holes in the step with the mounting holes on the frame and note the location of the mounting tab slots. Align the slots with the tabs.
-
-
3
Insert the tabs into the tab mounting slots on the frame. Make sure that all the tabs fully engage in the slots so that the steps mount flat and correctly.
-
4
Insert the eight mounting bolts through the holes in the steps and into the mounting holes in the frame. Tighten the bolts with a wrench or socket and ratchet until snug.
-
5
Torque the bolts to 15 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. If you don't have a torque wrench, then you can rent one at your local auto parts store in most areas.
-
6
Move to the opposite side of the Jeep and repeat the process. Enjoy your new Jeep side steps.

Tips & Warnings
Side steps can be helpful in getting in and out of the Jeep, but they reduce ground clearance. If you travel off-highway, you will need to remember this so that you can avoid banging them.
