How to Make Phone Skins
Cell phone skins are plastic sheets with sticky backs that are applied to the hard plastic side of a cell phone. They are used to give your phone an individual look and protect the surface of the phone from scratches. The added benefit of a skin is, unlike changing your faceplate, you will not void the warranty on the phone. The problem with store-bought skins is you do not have full creative license and since they are mass produced, you are not guaranteed a unique look for your phone. If you make your own, however, you will have a cell phone skin that is easy to make and truly unique.

Determine the size of your cell phone. You will need to know the length and width of your phone. You can either measure it yourself with a ruler or look online. Using a search engine, search for your model and the dimension of the phone in inches.

Determine the number of pixels you will need for your image or design. To do this, multiply each dimension by 200. For example, if your cell phone is 3 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide you get 700 pixels by 400 pixels. For ease, you should round your results to the nearest 100.

Choose a photo or design you want to appear on your phone. The picture or design is your choice. Make sure the image you choose is at least 500 kilobytes in size. The larger the size of the image the better resolution you will have in your final product.

Utilize a photo program such as Adobe Photoshop to touch up your image. You can use the touch-up features to crop the image, focus on your favorite part of the image, or correct errors in it. For example, you can remove red eye from pictures or change the centering of a design. You can use any of the available image correction tools available in your photo program. The important thing is that it should have a dpi, or dot per inch, of 150 or greater and use RGB colors. RGB and dpi are both settings that you can adjust in your photo program to ensure good color and print quality.

Follow the directions on a pack of blank printable cell phone skins. In general, the package will direct you to feed the skin into a color printer and print the image onto it. You can find blank skins that are made for your phone's model.

Peel the backing from your newly printed cell phone skin and apply it to your phone. Be sure you have the skin centered on the phone before applying it.

Thank you Erin. Firstly I doubt there's a 'blank printable cell phone skins' for my phone and I noticed aliaslani mentioned 3M Scotchcal paper or Avery (thank you for that) but is it possible to just laser print my design on sticky paper, cut out the nooks and crannies, laminate it and stick it on my phone (which has a lot of smooth edges)? -

Hi Erin, I know what type of paper that there are using for this. I think its 3M Scotchcal paper or Avery. Is this the better paper or there is other which would give me a very good printing result without smearing.

Hi Erin, I am actually trying to do my owm business in making this telephone skins. I wanted to print it myself rather than send to a printing shop. I have tried send few sample but I do not like the end result. It is not as good as the Gelaskins, Cellfans etc although it is laminated. Can you help me in finding a very good solvent based printer and I guess need lamination too. Any idea?
