How to Tell If You Have a Broken U Joint

A universal joint (or U-joint), which was initially conceived of by the ancient Greeks, is a joint in a rod that allows the rod to bend in many directions. Usually U-joints are found on one of the ends of a car's driveshaft for the purpose of transferring engine power and torque from the transmission to the drive wheels. The U-joint allows the car to properly handle the torque of the road, regardless of the road conditions. There are several indications that a universal joint is broken, which should be fixed immediately, as a broken U-joint could cause significant damage to your car.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your car into gear. If you feel a sudden clunking or sputtering, this may be an indication that the universal joint is nearly broken, or that the grease has worn out and the U-joint is strained.

    • 2

Drive your car carefully around the block or down the road. If you feel a vibration or uncommon rumbling that occurs as you accelerate, your U-joint may be worn or nearly broken.

    • 3

Take your car to a certified mechanic. He will be able to determine whether your universal joint is broken. There is no way of telling visually whether the universal joint is broken. Only a mechanic can diagnosis and solve the problem without causing additional damage to your car.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your car is exhibiting the symptoms of a worn universal joint, it is best to have it replaced by a mechanic. If your U-joint breaks while driving, your car will most likely lurch forward suddenly and uncontrollably, which may cause damage to your car, yourself or others.
