1
Mix flour and salt together. Add water and food coloring; mix until well combined.
-
2
Form mixture into a ball and knead very well for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth. For best results, don't skimp on this step; the ornaments will come out better with lots of kneading! Not enough kneading can lead to a brittle ornament. If you do not plan to bake it right away, put the dough in a reclosable plastic bag to ensure it does not dry out.

3
Roll out the dough, and use Christmas shaped cookie cutters to cut out the ornaments. Depending on the size of the cookie cutters, you can make a lot of ornaments -- perhaps 40 to 50. Remember to punch a hole at the top for stringing ribbon. For a cute grandparent gift, use your child's hand or foot to make an imprint on the ornament.
-
4
Bake at a low oven setting -- 250 degrees Fahrenheit -- for about 2.5 hours, or until the ornaments appear hard and dry. Let cool overnight.
-
5
The next day, paint with acrylic paint and seal with an acrylic varnish for durability. Add a ribbon for hanging, and you are done.
