How to Make a Jewelry Cabinet
A jewelry cabinet can be an indispensable storage device for any true jewelry lover. More spacious than a jewelry case, a jewelry cabinet has several different compartments and ample room for a generous collection of necklaces, rings, bracelets and the like. It also keeps jewelry tidy and organized, and protects it from dust and other potentially damaging debris. Store bought jewelry cabinets can retail for hundreds of dollars. However, with a bit of planning, time, and creativity, it is fairly easy and fun to make a jewelry cabinet at home.

1
Visit a retailer in person or online that sells unfinished wood organizers with drawers that slide out. These are typically used on desktops to organize office supplies, or to hold CD collections. Look at Ikea.com to see some good examples.
-
2
Purchase as many of the unfinished wood organizers as you will require to contain your jewelry collection. Make sure they are the same width and depth, as the idea is to stack them.
-
-
3
Measure the sides and bottoms of the drawers' interiors. Use the measurements to cut out pieces of liner fabric. Choose felt or velvet to line your drawers; these fabrics are soft on your jewelry and can be visually appealing.
-
4
Apply a thin layer of craft glue to the sides and bottoms of each drawer. Position the liner fabric over the glue. Allow it to dry.
-
5
Determine the order in which you want to stack the wood organizers. Use a heavy-duty adhesive intended for wood to attach the bottom of one organizer to the top of another. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for application and drying time.
-
6
Cut two strips of wood to fit along both the right and left sides of the top of your cabinet (not the front, where the drawers slide out). Orient the strips so they are perpendicular to the floor. Make sure the strips of wood are about 2 inches deep, so that the screws of 1-inch hooks can penetrate them without poking all the way through.
-
7
Screw several hooks into each of the strips of wood. Note that the hooks are intended to hold necklaces, and their vinyl coat will be gentle on the jewelry. Leave enough space between each hook for you to easily remove and replace necklaces.
-
8
After screwing in the hooks, use the heavy-duty adhesive to glue the strips to the right and left sides of the top of your cabinet. Allow them to dry according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. Do not nail the strips to the cabinet, as this will interfere with the sliding motion of the drawers.
-
9
Decorate your cabinet with paint according to your own taste. Once the paint is dry, add a protective, clear finish to seal it.
-
10
Designate different drawers for different jewelry. Place rings in one, bracelets in another, costume baubles in one, and fine jewelry in another. Hang necklaces from the hooks on the side of your cabinet to keep them tangle-free.
