How to Use Nitrogen in Car Tires

Using nitrogen to inflate car tires, rather than air, is becoming increasingly popular because there are benefits to the switch. Tires filled with nitrogen tend to lose pressure more slowly, which can improve mileage, reduce tire wear and prolong tire life. Rather than pay a tire shop to inflate your tires with nitrogen, but you can do it inexpensively at home in about 10 minutes per tire.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise your vehicle using the jack and place it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is secure before crawling under it.

    • 2

Remove the valve-stem cap on the tires and unscrew the Schrader valve with the Schrader valve tool by turning it counter-clockwise. This is going to quickly let all the air out of the tires.

    • 3

Reinstall the Schrader valve on each tire. On the side of the tires or in your owners manual, look for the recommended tire pressure. This figure will be represented in PSI (pounds of pressure per square inch).

    • 4

Place the air nozzle from the nitrogen tire inflation tool onto the Schrader valve of the tire. Pull and hold the trigger until the pressure listed for that tire is achieved.

    • 5

Repeat this process for each tire, remove the jack stands and drop the vehicle back to the ground using the jack.
