How to Construct a House Model

When you are planning to build a house, it often helps to see your house-to-be in 3-D. One effective way to do this is to create a model. Models created by architectural firms can be expensive, so make your own out of materials you have around the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Work out some preliminary drawings on graph paper. Graph paper is helpful because you can make to-scale drawings converting the squares of the graph paper to feet. Add as much detail to the drawing as you can so that you transfer it to the model, such as the placement of windows and doors. Do this for every floor.

Do the drawing again, but break it down still further by doing a drawing for each wall in each room. In other words, instead of doing a bird's eye view of the house (looking at it from above), picture yourself standing in front of each wall in each room and draw what you would like to see, such as placement of windows and doors, fireplaces, built-in cupboards, or any details you wish to include. The position of furniture is not important. Use a pair of scissors to cut out the windows and doors in the drawings of each wall. This drawing will be a template for your house model.

Tape the drawing of each wall to a piece of cardboard. Trace around the windows and door openings. Use a ruler to make sure your lines stay straight. Label each wall on the back of the cardboard so that you can put the model together accurately.

Tape the model together making sure that each wall goes together in the proper order. You can apply tape to the outside of the corners as well as the inside to secure the right angles. Since your house model will not be supporting anything but itself, you don't have to worry about it being particularly structurally sound.
