How to Add a Color and Text Label to a Mac Icon

The Mac OS (7.0 or higher) makes it easy to color-code a folder or document. You can also customize the labels and colors themselves.

  1. Step 1

    Click once on the name or icon of the file or folder to select it.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the Edit menu and choose Labels; select the label you like.

  3. Step 3

    To customize the label, click on the Edit menu, select Preferences and choose the Labels tab.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the color box to change the label color. You can choose from six different color pickers: the CMYK Picker, Crayon Picker, HLS Picker, HSV Picker, HTML Picker and RGB Picker. Choose the color you like.

  5. Step 5

    Change the text label by selecting the name of the label and typing whatever description you like.

Tips & Warnings
  • CMYK Picker gives you slider bars for degrees of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, the colors used in professional printing.
  • Crayon Picker gives you a box of crayons and has names for all of the colors.
  • HLS Picker gives you a color circle with a crosshair cursor that you can mouse around to select a hue angle, color saturation and lightness (0%-100%).
  • HSV Picker gives you a color circle with a crosshair cursor that you can mouse around to select a hue angle, color saturation and value (0%-100%).
  • HTML Picker gives you slider bars for degrees of red, green and blue (0%-100%), reveals the color code for the Web (such as #FF3300), and allows you to "snap to" the corresponding Web color.
  • RGB Picker gives you slider bars for degrees of red, green and blue (0-100%).
