How to Make English Riding Breeches

Horseback riding can be an expensive sport. Each piece of equipment and each item of clothing can add up to a fortune. It can get especially pricey when you have a young rider, who is constantly growing and needing new equestrian clothes. Thankfully, if you have basic sewing skills, you can make your own English riding breeches for a fraction of the cost. When making your own riding breeches, you can personalize them by making them in any color or size you want.

Things You'll Need

• Stretch fabric
• Matching thread
• White chalk
• Fabric scissors
• Sewing machine
• Elastic

Instructions

1. Fold the fabric in half then sit on top of it with your legs stretched out. Use the chalk to trace around your legs, starting at your waist, going down and up each leg.

2. Add about 1 inch all around the tracing and cut through both layers of fabric to make two pieces of the same shape.

3. Lay the two fabric pieces directly on top of each other, right sides together. Sew up both sides of each leg.

4. Hem the bottom of each pant leg. Hem the waistline, leaving an opening of about 1 inch. Cut out a piece of elastic that is long enough to wrap around your waist.

5. Thread the elastic through the waistband. Sew the two ends of the elastic together. Hand sew the 1 inch opening closed. Turn the pants right side out.
