How to Complete the 1040X for the Home Tax Credit
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), first-time homebuyers purchasing homes in 2008, 2009 or 2010 may be eligible to receive a home tax credit. To qualify for the credit, the home purchased must be the primary residence of the tax payer.
For homes purchased in 2008, tax payers are eligible for a tax credit of up to $7,500. This tax credit is treated like a no interest loan and must be paid back to the government in 15 annual installments starting in 2010. For homes purchased in 2009 or 2010, tax payers are eligible for a tax credit of up to $8,000. This tax credit does not need to be paid back unless the tax payer sells the home within three years.
The IRS is allowing tax payers to claim the home tax credit for homes purchased in 2009 on their 2008 or 2009 tax returns. For people that wish to claim the credit on their 2008 return that was due on April 15, 2009, an amendment will have to be submitted to the IRS to receive a refund from the credit. The amendment will require the completion and submission of IRS Forms 1040X and 5405. (See Reference 1.)
