How to Type a Book Report

Book reports are a classroom staple for many reasons. They ensure that students read the book (at least for the most part), they allow students to demonstrate understanding of literary concepts such as plot, theme, and characterization, and they provide a handy vehicle for developing writing skills. Book reports also offer practice with important presentation skills such as organization and attention to detail. You can think of the assignment as a prelude to more demanding types of writing, such as research papers, capstone projects (culminating papers for certifications or classes), or thesis projects.

Instructions

  1. Preparing for the Report

    • 1

Clarify the teacher's requirements about the type and length of acceptable books. Be sure the book you choose matches the requirements for difficulty, topic, and genre.

    • 2

Choose a book that interests you as much as possible. It will be much easier to read a book that you enjoy.

    • 3

Study the assignment and the grading standards before you begin reading, if possible. Note any requirements for quotations or supporting anecdotes from the story so you can jot these down as you read.

    • 4

Make a schedule for reading and completing the requirements of the assignment. Use a calendar and work backwards from the due date. Set goals for completion of subtasks like finishing the reading and completing the rough draft.

    Read the Book

    • 5

Set a reading goal for each day or week that will allow you to finish the required reading in accordance with your schedule. It is counterproductive to try to read an entire book the night before you need to write the report.

    • 6

Read the book, noting the page and paragraph of quotations or other information you will need later for your report.

    • 7

Complete any necessary background research on the author, the political or social climate, or other relevant information.

    Prepare the Report

    • 8

Review the assignment before beginning to write the report. Make sure you understand all terms and other aspects. Make an outline or use a graphic organizer to plan your report.

    • 9

Write a rough draft in accordance with the assignment requirements. Refer to the assignment requirements frequently.

    • 10

Type your final draft using a word processor. Use the spell check and grammar check functions. Be sure to proofread, as well, and have someone else look over your finished work before submitting it.

Tips & Warnings

  • When setting up your schedule, be sure to allow extra time for each step for unexpected delays. Plan to have your project completed several days before the due date.

  • It is imperative to understand the assignment fully and to distinguish between a book report and a book review. According to the Lakewood Public Library Student Guide, a "book report" is completely factual, including identification and publication details of the work as well as a factual summary. A "book review," on the other hand, includes the opinions of the student writer.
