Add more zinc to your diet. Foods such as fish and nuts are natural sources of nuts. As it can be difficult to obtain enough zinc with food alone, zinc supplements are often used. Zinc helps to regulate the hormones that can cause cystic acne. It also has a role in maintaining proper oil production. It's important that you speak with a health care professional regarding the proper dosage, since too much zinc can be toxic.

Discuss taking antibiotics with your doctor. There are several oral antibiotics that can be taken including minocycline, tetracycline, and erythromycin. The doctor will likely start you on a high dose and reduce it as your cysts decrease. There are risks associated with long-term use of antibiotics which also should be considered and discussed with your doctor.

Women may consider taking birth control pills. The pills are effective at reducing acne cysts because they suppress the androgen hormones that cause the cysts, but can often cause undesirable side effects. They require a doctor's supervision and will need to be prescribed.

    • 4

Treat severe cystic acne internally with Accutane, a form of vitamin A available only by prescription. It can be a dangerous medication if not used properly. It is required that you use two specific forms of birth control or have your tubes tied while on Accutane, as it will cause severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Your doctor will evaluate whether or not you are a good candidate and will discuss the dosage and other considerations with you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not take Accutane while breastfeeding.

  • Do not take vitamin A supplements while taking Accutane.

  • Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin.
