How to Tie Glow Sticks to a Fishing Line

Glow sticks, which can be purchased cheaply, provide the ideal illumination for night fishing. A quick bend and snap is all it takes to light a glow stick, and rigging on the fishing line takes less than a minute. Once tied, the glow stick can provide two hours or more of soft light to mark and angler's position in the water when used in tandem with a float bobber. Almost any color of glow stick can be used for night fishing, although chartreuse (yellow-green) tends to attract bait fish which, in turn, draw the bigger fish out at night.

Things You'll Need

  • Glow sticks with tube-type bracelet adapters
  • Rod and reel spooled with line
  • Bait and tackle, including floats
  • Slip two opaque plastic adapters on the main line. The adapters are small tubes used for turning glow sticks into bracelets and necklaces. Adapters come with most packages of glow sticks; check the label before buying.

  • Rig the end of the main line for fishing with live bait, chopped bait or artificial lures, tying them on with a clinch knot. For instructions on tying a clinch knot, see the link in the References section.

  • Position the two plastic adapters at the desired spot on the main line, then slide them apart the length of a glow stick.

  • Bend and shake the glow stick to start the chemical reaction that makes it light up.

  • Insert each end of the glow stick into the top and bottom adapters and press together for a tight fit. With the line through the adapters, the glow stick will be attached to the main fishing line.

  • Adjust the glow stick along the line by pulling apart the adapters and sliding them to a new position.

  • Attach a float to the main line just above the glow stick to help mark the position in the water at night.
