How to Treat Gland Swelling After Prostate Surgery

Prostate surgery is sometimes necessary for prostate cancer, BPH (enlarged prostate) or other related conditions. Post-surgery, you might experience uncomfortable conditions such as pain and swelling. The swelling is temporary and will go away as you heal, but there are steps you can take to address it during this time.

Things You'll Need

• Small towel
• Anti-inflammatory medication
• Ice pack

Instructions

1. Put a small, rolled towel under your scrotum when you are lying down or sitting; this will give it support and reduce pressure.

2. Wear tighter-fitting underwear for support but not so tight it is uncomfortable.

3. Use NSAID pain relievers (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen. They not only relieve pain but ease inflammation which lessens swelling.

4. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or a frozen bag of vegetables to ease swelling.

5. Tell your doctor if your swelling has not subsided after 10 days; this could indicate an infection or some other problem.
