Bed bugs are microscopic insects that invade your bed and may cause skin irritation, bug bites and other irritating side effects. You may find bed bugs on your top mattress, mattress pad, box spring, bedding and linens or the carpet or flooring near your bed. Take your entire bed apart, including the sheets, pillowcases, comforter, throw blankets and mattress pad. Wash your linens and pillows with hot water, repeating the process every few days until you no longer see evidence of bed bugs. It may take several weeks to eliminate them entirely.

Vacuum both sides of your mattress and box spring as well the carpet underneath and around your bed. Once you have vacuumed these areas, remove the vacuum bag, seal it up and place it outside in the garbage can immediately. For extra elimination power, steam-clean your carpets as the heat helps to kill bed bugs quicker.

Spray your mattress, box spring and carpets underneath and near your bed with a commercial bed-bug spray. Be sure to get every inch of the mattresses and flooring, including the flip side of your mattresses. If your mattress or box spring have holes in them, they may need to be replaced as bed bugs can be hiding inside.

Prevent bed bugs from returning by changing and washing your linens often, including bed pillows and throw pillows. Vacuum your mattresses once a week and the carpets in your bedroom every few days.
