Things You'll Need
- Water test kit
Buy a water test kit from the nursery or the local water supply store. The kits come with different tests like ammonia, nitrate and pH. You will be using the pH test kit.
Fill some pond water in the container that comes with the kit. Add the chemical from the test kit to the water sample. Follow the instructions on how much chemical to be used. The chemical reacts with the pond water and changes the color of the water.
Compare the color with the color chart from the kit to get the pH of the pond water. The ideal pond water pH is between 7 and 8.5.
Add baking soda to the pond to increase the pH. Use 1/3 cup of baking soda per 1,000 gallons of water.
Add lime neutralizer from the local water supply store in the pond to lower the pH. Follow the directions on the lime neutralizer to lower the pH gradually.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not change the pH in the pond by more than 0.2 pH per day. It causes stress to the fish and the plants. Check the pH often as you make changes to the pH.
- Check the expiration date on the chemical that is in the test kit to get accurate readings.
