How to Take Care of a Human Hair Lace Wig

Lace front wigs---also known as lace cap wigs---are made from Indian or Chinese human hairs that have been carefully attached to either a French or Swedish lace cap. These human hair wigs are lighter than traditional wigs and created in a manner that offers a more natural appearance when worn. One custom lace front wig can take more than 40 hours to create and because of this, they can be fairly expensive to purchase ($200 to $300 at minimum in 2009). With correct care, your lace front wig can withstand eight to 12 months of constant use. Does this Spark an idea?

Use the wide-toothed comb to detangle the wig. Grasp the hair about midway from the root lace cap and gently comb tangles from the ends of the hair first. Then continue to comb in longer sections. This will help to prevent breakage while detangling. You may detangle the wig while wearing it.

    • 2

Remove the wig if you were wearing it while detangling it, and place it on a wig stand. Gently use sprayer to wet the length of the hair with warm water. If you do not have a sprayer, lean the wig stand back and allow water to stream down the length of the hair. Make sure that the hair is hanging down into the water.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of shampoo into your hands. Rub your hands together to distribute the shampoo along your palms. Apply the shampoo to the wig hair by stroking your hands along the length of the hair. Do not rub or apply any friction. Let the shampoo sit on the hair for a few minutes. Gently rinse the shampoo out using the same technique as in step 2.

    • 4

Repeat step 3 with conditioner. You can gently finger comb down the length of the hair to distribute conditioner and detangle.

    • 5

After rinsing conditioner from the wig, carefully squeeze out excess water with a hand towel. Do not briskly towel dry. Wrap the towel around the length of the hair and press to remove excess water. Do not twist or wring the hair. After removing as much water as you can, turn the wig inside out so that the lace cap is visible, and place it on the wig stand to air dry. At this time, you can spray the inside of the wig with knot sealer, which can help to extend the life of the wig by keeping the knots at the base from fraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • To extend the life of a human hair lace cap wig, wash only once every two weeks.

  • Avoid washing with shampoos containing sulfates, as sulfates can be very harsh on hair.

  • When styling, avoid over the over use of products, which can build up on the hair.
