1
Enclose your pillows and mattress in dust mite covers. Dust mite covers have two main purposes: to trap any existing dust mites inside the barrier and to prevent new dust mites from infecting the areas. The cover should be made of an airtight plastic or polyurethane.

2
Wash your bedding at least once a week. Wash anything that is used on your bed, such as the dust mite covers, sheets, pillowcases, blankets, comforters and even stuffed toys. Wash in hot water, and use bleach if possible. If you have any fabrics that are unable to be washed in hot water, place them in the freezer for 24 to 48 hours to kill the dust mites.

3
Select wooden, leather or plastic-covered sofas and chairs; dust mites are unable to thrive on these surfaces. If you do have upholstered furniture, vacuum the upholstery at least once per week.
-
4
Vacuum your rugs and carpets every few days to prevent the buildup of dust mites. For best results, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. If your dust mite allergy is particularly severe, consider using a dust mite pesticide powder on your carpets every two months. However, keep in mind that this powder is expensive and can irritate your airways as well. Some people may find that the best way to control dust mites in their homes is to remove their carpeting. Carpets trap dust mites and other particles that can cause allergies.

Keep your home free of dust and clutter. Use a damp rag to wipe off all the surfaces in your home at least once per week. Keep stuffed animals off beds, and hang all clothes in the closet, keeping the closet door closed at all times. Try to avoid keeping dried flower arrangements, straw baskets and wall hangings in the home.
