How to Tell a Guy You're on Your Period
Telling a guy that it's "that" time of the month can be more painful than the cramps caused by your period. Mentioning the "p" word can be especially hard when the relationship is new or you've just moved to the next level and have begun having sex. However, with hints and a simple casualty about the subject, you'll be able to tell your guy each month without worry.

1
Wait until you feel you really need to tell the guy you're on your period. Don't wait until the last second when things are getting hot and heavy, but don't blurt it out over dinner either. Avoiding to tell the reason why "tonight isn't a good night" is best, but if you can't avoid spilling the beans, at least choose a time when things might start heating up but haven't really gotten hot yet.

2
Keep your distance more than usual throughout the night as far as touching is concerned. Don't completely keep away from your man, but don't fall all over him giving him the impression that something will happen that night.

3
Mention casually that you're having bad stomach cramps or that your head hurts. He may get the picture just from the mention of "cramps," but mention this a couple of times throughout the night to really ensure he's aware that you're not feeling your best.

4
If you live together or one of you is at the other's home, tell him you need to take some pain medicine. Hope that he knows this is for the relief of menstrual pains.

5
Tell him again that you're having bad cramps. Casually drop the period "bomb" on him at this time. After a night of "my head hurts and I have cramps" with the added fact that you had to take pain medication, he should have gotten the hint already. Casually say something like "I really have bad cramps, I really hate this time of the month." Try not to use the word "period," as this seems to freak guys out more than other phrases.

Tips & Warnings
Act casual throughout the night. If you don't make it a big deal, then it's no big deal.
Your guy may still freak out, but that just shows his immaturity.
