How to Improve Transmission Bittorrent Download Speed
The cross-platform Transmission BitTorrent software is one of the most used BitTorrent clients, thanks to the open source nature of the program. Whether running Transmission on Windows, Mac or Linux, there are a number of settings that can be tweaked to improve Transmission BitTorrent download speed. These settings customize the application to work with your computer and Internet connection more efficiently.

Correctly Forward Bittorrent Ports

Launch Transmission.

Select "Edit > Preferences"

Click the "Network" tab.

Ensure the port is in the 49152--65534 range.

Check "Use UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding from my router."

Open a web browser.

Navigate to your router. If you need help accessing your router, see the port forward help listed in the resources.

Enter your administrative password to access your router.

Go to the port forwarding section of the router.

Set up forwarding rules for the port that Transmission is using, as per step 4.

Save changes and restart the router.
Setting Speeds

Perform a network speed test using any number of online flash or Java Internet connection speed tests.

Take note of your upload speed and your download speed.

Launch Transmission.

Select "Edit > Preferences."

Click the "Speed" tab.

Check "Limit Download Speed" and enter a number that is 95% of the download speed reported in your Internet connection speed test.

Check "Limit Upload Speed" and enter a number that is is 80% of the upload speed reported in your Internet connection speed test.

Tips & Warnings
Beyond simply adjusting Transmission, it is also a good idea to select health torrents when downloading. Simply selecting those torrents with the most seeders is not always the best strategy if there are also many leechers. Torrents with a higher ration of seeders to leechers will always be the fastest.
