How to Find a Friend by Their Gamertag

Having an Xbox is great, but where's the fun if you're not flanking your friends in the latest online shooter? You can add friends to your profile by searching their gamertag on the Xbox console or website.

Xbox One

  • Navigate to the right to display the Friends hub on the dashboard. Within the hub, select "Friends."

  • Press "A" on "Find Someone" and type in their gamertag. Be careful with the spelling and the number of spaces.

  • Select "Add Friend" when your friend comes up in the search. The name automatically goes on your list, and the friend can see that you're a follower.

Xbox 360

  • Sign in to Xbox Live and go to your dashboard. Press the right bumper to switch to the Social tab.

  • Select "Friends," followed by "Add Friend."

  • Enter your friend's gamertag and pick "Send Request" to forward a friend invite. Unlike the Xbox One, adding someone doesn't automatically put them on your list; you need to mutually agree to be friends on the Xbox 360.

Xbox Live Website

  • Navigate to the Xbox Live website (see Resources) and sign in to your account.

  • Click "Friends" either on the navigation bar or underneath the Messages tile.

  • Type your friend's gamertag into the search field. Be sure to type it exactly since the search doesn't give partial results. When you press "Enter," the site will redirect you to your friend's profile.

  • Click "Add Friend." There's no confirmation after clicking.

Tips & Warnings

  • Certain apps, such as Facebook, let you see which of your friends on that service also use the Xbox console.
  • You must know your friend's gamertag to add them. There is no other way to search directly for a friend.
