How to Make Brown Bread

Brown bread is sometimes called Boston brown bread or Irish brown bread. In some areas, people refer to wheat bread as brown bread. Brown bread is usually made with whole wheat flour, molasses, baking soda and milk or water. Other ingredients can be optionally included, such as pecans or powdered sugar.   • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp. molasses
  • 1 tbsp. dark brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

      Grease a large loaf pan. You can also use a large casserole dish if you want your bread served in small squares.

      Combine the wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls. Mix well.

      Combine both mixtures into one large bowl and mix.

      Pour the mixture into your loaf pan. Mix in any optional ingredients.

      Place the mixture in the oven and allow it to bake for forty minutes to an hour. Press a toothpick in the center and pull it out to check for doneness. If it comes out clean, the bread is done.

      Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Optionally, you can sprinkle the bread with powdered sugar.
