Screening a deck can provide you with a comfortable and relaxing space for family meals, relaxation and play. Creating a screened in deck is a bit more complicated than simply screening a covered patio; however, your screened in deck can be used as a room for much of the year. This can be a DIY project, or you can opt to hire out the more complex parts and do the rest yourself.
Things You'll Need
- Lumber to match your current deck
- Drill and bits
- Porch screening kit, including vertical supports, horizontal base pieces and snap on covers
- Tin snips
- Screen tool
How to Build Your Own Screened in Deck
Start with a deck in good condition. Be sure that your deck has a roof, and that the roof is in good repair as well. Make any necessary changes or repairs to your deck to make it appropriate for screening. See resources for more information about building a roof over your deck if needed before screening.
Add additional vertical supports to your deck if necessary for screening a deck. Plan for a vertical support approximately every 4 feet for a good result. Be sure that you have supports in place around the door area of your screened in deck as well. Secure additional supports into place using wood screws.
Screw vertical base strips from the porch screening kit into place on your vertical porch supports.
Trim the horizontal base pieces for your screening with a pair of tin snips. Screw into place.
Push screen and spline into the first vertical support using a screening tool. Pull taut and fit it into the next support. Repeat for the horizontal supports. Finish screening the deck, section by section.
Snap the cover pieces into place on your screened in deck.
