How to Upgrade Volvos
Volvos have long been associated with safety, reliability and comfort. Those are certainly worthwhile attributes, but it is also possible to upgrade Volvos to handle better, accelerate quicker and look better, whether it's a vintage P1800 coupe or a current V70. The following article covers suggestions on how to upgrade your Volvo, but does not cover the specifics of how to perform each upgrade, since the process is different for each model. Consult a workshop manual for detailed instructions on each upgrade for your particular model of Volvo.
Things You'll Need
- Socket set and ratchet
- Access to Volvo performance catalogs or performance parts
- Workshop manual for your specific model of Volvo

1
Install lighter and stronger performance wheels and wider, stickier tires that will provide more grip in corners. To install these, simply jack up the vehicle and remove the wheels with a lug wrench. Reinstall the new wheels and tires. Let the vehicle back down onto the ground.
-
2
Install firmer sport shocks from a company like Koni or Bilstein that will reduce body roll and make the car more nimble. Pair the shocks with stiffer and lower springs to reduce excess body movement, better control body roll and lower the center of gravity.

3
Replace the stock anti-roll bars with larger-diameter anti-roll bars. Some Volvos didn't come with a rear anti-roll bar, so installing a set of larger bars from a company like IPD is one way to eliminate excessive body roll and make your car feel much more planted during cornering.
-
4
Upgrade the engine's ECU (electronic control unit) on modern Volvos with one that has more aggressive spark and fuel curves for an increase in power. On older models, upgrade the ignition system for more efficient ignition of fuel and air.
-
5
Replace the restrictive factory exhaust with a larger diameter system that will evacuate spent gasses quicker. On new cars, use a system that goes from the catalytic converter back and on older cars install a header and a full, free-flow exhaust for a power increase. Turbocharged Volvos in particular benefit from a larger diameter exhaust.
-
6
Install a larger or less-restrictive cold air intake. Depending on the model of Volvo you own, the power gain from a better intake system can be substantial.
-
7
Upgrade the interior with better bolstered sport seats from Recaro, Sparco or a similar company. Replace the stock shift knob and pedals with aftermarket items.
-
8
Upgrade the exterior with a body kit, subtle rear wing, or larger front air dam. Have a professional body shop color match the kit to the color of your car and have the shop professionally install it.
