Gum is a sticky substance that is meant to be chewed for a long period of time without coming apart. If, by accident, you somehow sit on a piece of chewed gum, it can be tricky to remove the gunk from your pants. Gum can also get stuck to a pair of pants if a piece is left in the pocket when the clothes are laundered. But if you are willing to do a little work, you will be able to remove the gum from the pants.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic bag
- Butter knife
- Ironing board
Freeze the Gum Out
Put the pants in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer.
Wait two hours and take the pants out of the freezer. You will notice that the gum is now hard as a rock.
Chisel the gum off the pants with a butter knife. The gum may even come off in one big lump. Just go slowly, so that you don't accidentally rip the pants with the knife.
Iron the Gum Off
Lay a piece of cardboard on an ironing board.
Put the sticky pair of pants on the cardboard, with the gum side facing down. The gum will be between the cardboard and the pants.
Iron the pants over the spot where the gum is stuck. Do this for three to five minutes, or until all of the gum has begun to stick to the cardboard instead of the pants.
Tips & Warnings
- Instead of sticking your pants in the freezer, you can just hold a chunk of ice against the gum until it hardens.
- If you do not have a piece of cardboard for the ironing method, you can use a section of newspaper, instead. You may want to put a sheet of plain white paper over it first, to protect your clothing from the newspaper ink.
- You can find many suggestions for removing gum, including the use of peanut butter or chocolate. Be careful of such methods. They could end up staining your clothes, so don't use them unless you must.
