How to Bait a Minnow Trap
A minnow trap is a cylindrical plastic or metal mesh trap used to catch minnows. It has a small opening on either side to allow minnows in to take your bait. However, once the minnows have entered the trap, they become disoriented and cannot find their way back out. The average cost of a minnow trap is $10, and the average cost of bait is much less. Fishermen often use canned dog food, canned cat food, sliced bread or crab as bait for the minnows.

Choose your bait. Bring a variety with you, but start with the bread. Roll the slices of bread into one large bread ball and set it in the middle of the trap.

2
Place your trap in shallow water with the current. The trap should be mostly under water and laying flat.

Try another bait. If the bread hasn't worked or has dissolved too quickly, try the can of dog food. Puncture eight holes in the lid of the dog food with your knife and set it the middle of the trap. Replace the trap. Try the cat food next, using the same procedure.
