How to Apply for an International Driving Permit From Overseas

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document that, when presented with a valid U.S. driver's license, allows U.S. citizens and residents to legally drive in foreign countries. Some countries allow U.S. citizens and residents to use the IDP indefinitely, while others require that the IDP be used only for short-term stays. While U.S. citizens and residents planning to travel overseas may apply for the IDP before leaving the U.S., you can also apply for the IDP from overseas. The American Automobile Association (AAA), upon verification of an applicants' valid U.S. driver's license, grants the IDP.

Instructions

  1. The Application Process

    • 1

Go to the AAA website at www.aaa.com to print a copy of the application for an IDP.

    • 2

Complete the IDP application and attach 2 passport-sized photographs. The passport-sized photographs must be 2 inches x 2 inches. Be sure to sign your name on the back of the passport sized photographs.

    • 3

Photocopy both the front side and the reverse side of your U.S. driver's license. Your U.S. driver's license must be valid before an IDP can be issued.

    • 4

Mail the application and all supporting materials, including the IDP processing fee ($15 in 2009), to AAA at the following address:

      AAA/IDP
      1000 AAA Dr.
      Heathrow, FL 32746
      Attn: Mailstop #28

When including the fee, do not send cash as cash will not be accepted. You can mail a check or money order payable AAA/IDP.

    • 5

Wait for about 4-6 weeks to receive your IDP. If you need your IDP sooner, you can send additional funds to AAA/IDP covering the cost of the expedited United States Postal Service (USPS) return shipping option you would like.
