How to Get a Work Permit for Canada for US Citizens

The first step in securing a work permit in Canada is to get a job. You cannot get a work permit for the purpose of finding employment--only people with documented job offers are eligible to apply for a work permit. Once you have a job, the application process is relatively easy. Patience and procedure are the keys to dealing with immigration and labor laws.

Get a job in Canada. Before you can apply for a work permit, you must have a secured job offer from a Canadian employer, and written proof of your employment. You will also need to provide proof that you are actually qualified for the job you obtain. Qualifications include both education and experience. Your employer will also have to file an HRSDC (Human Resources and Social Development of Canada) labour market opinion form. When the HRSDC approves the application, your employer will send you a copy and you will then be able to apply for a work permit.

Complete the Application for Work Permit -- IMM1295. The form can be found at the website of the Canadian Center of Immigration and Citizenship (CIC). Along with the application form, you will need the letter from your employer, the HRSDC letter, proof of your qualification, your valid U.S. passport or enhanced drivers license, a Certificat d'Acceptation de Quebec if the job is in the province of Quebec, six passport photos and one of each of your family members, proof of funds such as a bank statement and proof of payment of the $150 application fee.

Submit your application, payment and copies of all supplemental documentation to the Canadian Embassy that has legal jurisdiction over the state in which you reside. There are six Canadian Embassies in the United States--Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Buffalo, N.Y,; New York; Detroit and Los Angeles. The list of states over which each presides and mailing addresses are listed on the websites of each consulate.

Wait for the application to be reviewed. Once your application is reviewed, it will either be approved, denied, or you may be asked to attend an interview in person. If your permit is denied, you will be informed in writing. If it is approved, you will be sent a letter of approval which you will show to the Canadian border officer when you enter Canada.
