Things You'll Need:
- Proof Of Enrollment In Qualifying State Assistance Program
-
Step 1
Enter Your Zip Code To See If Your State ParticipatesThe SafeLink Wireless Lifeline Service is currently available in 19 states plus Washington, D.C. See the Tips section below for a listing of the 19 states. And remember, very soon, all 50 states and Puerto Rico will be included in the program.
If you live in a participating state, go to the SafeLink website at www.safelinkwireless.com. There is a link to the website in the Resources section below.
On the main page of the website, enter your Zip Code in the box provided to get the enrollment process started. -
Step 2
The qualification requirements vary slightly for each participating state. Let's say you live in Illinois. After you put in your Illinois city Zip Code and hit Enter, you will be taken to a page that will tell you what your benefits will be. For example, in Illinois, you would receive a Free SafeLink Wireless phone and a FREE cellular plan that gives you 60 Minutes every month.
It also tells you that you qualify for Lifeline Service in Illinois if:
1. You already participate in one of the following Income-Assistance programs:
* Federal Public Housing Assistance / Section 8
* Food Stamps Program
* Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
* Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
* National School Lunch Program (free program only)
* Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
* Medicaid
2. No one in your household currently receives Lifeline Assistance through another phone carrier. If someone in your household is receiving Lifeline Assistance you must cancel the service before applying for Lifeline Service through SafeLink Wireless.
3. You have a valid United States Postal Address. You must have a valid street address that can be delivered to by the United States Postal Service. You cannot use a PO Box address, or you won't qualify for a free phone!
If you still qualify after reading these requirements, click on the "APPLY" button. -
Step 3
SafeLink Provides Free Cell Phones and MinutesYou will then be able to fill out the online application form for the SafeLink Wireless Service program.
After you have filled out the application, you should download your completed application and save it to your computer's desktop or other folder for your own records.
The site will provide you with an Enrollment ID number after you fill out the application. Print this off and save it. You can use this Enrollment ID to go back to the website and check on the status of your application. You can also call 1-800-977-3768 to check on the progress of your application.
