How to Make a Kwanzaa Candle Holder

Kwanzaa is observed Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 and was created to celebrate the spiritual unity of the African people in the United States and throughout the world. One of the celebration's most recognizable symbols is the Mishumaa Saba, or Seven Candles, according to Officialkwanzaawebsite.org. These candles represent the Seven Principles, which all African people should follow to help live a better life. The Scandles can be purchased or made in your home with your children's help.

Things You'll Need

• 1 lb. professional clay
• Flour
• Water
• Seven stick candles
• Paintbrush
• Black paint
• Green paint
• Red paint

1. Knead half of the professional clay until it becomes easy to mold, working on a surface that can get dirty. This is an appropriate task for a child 3 or older.

2. After the clay is workable, roll it out into the shape of a snake. The clay should be long enough and thick enough to support seven candles.

3. Divide the remaining clay into seven pieces, making sure one piece is slightly larger than the rest.

4. Form the seven pieces of clay into balls a bit smaller than golf balls. Place flour on your hands or your child's hands if the clay becomes sticky.

5. Place the seven balls on top of the snake with the largest ball placed into the center. Rub a small amount of water onto the bottom of the balls if you are having trouble getting them to stick.

6. Create a hole in each ball, or have your child do so, using a candle. The hole should be big enough and deep enough to support the candle.

7. Allow the candle holder to dry for at least 24 hours.

8. Paint the Mishumaa Saba the three traditional Kwanzaa colors: black, green and red. For instance, paint the left end green, the right end red, and leave a space in between to be painted black.

9. Place the candles into their holders and light them for Kwanzaa.
