KW stands for kilowatt. Electricity bills state your cost in terms of kilowatt hours. To understand the costs of running things in your home and to understand what your electricity bill really means it's important to understand what kilowatt hours are and how they are calculated.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

  1. Step 1

Understand just what a kilowatt hour is. One kilowatt hour is the same as a 1,000 watt device operating for one hour straight. If you were to use five of these devices at once for one hour that would be five kilowatt hours.

  2. Step 2

Find out how much your electrical devices are using. Find the wattage listed for the device, such as 60 watts on an average light bulb. Multiply the wattage by the amount of hours you use the light in one day, then multiply by the amount of days you use it in a month, then divide by 1,000 to get the kilowatt hours used that month.

  3. Step 3

Determine your cost. Take the amount of kilowatt hours and multiply that number by the amount your utility company charges you per kilowatt hour. Often this is a few cents per kilowatt hour.
