Step 1
Create a leather-string or construction-paper forehead band to set the mood. Spice it up by gluing on beads, feathers, fringe or even buttons and sequins. Try feathers/ribbons hanging down over both ears.
-
Step 2
Play with cosmetics. Practice drawing tiny animals, tree shapes and clouds on your cheeks.
-
Step 3
Load on the layers. A body suit, vest, capelet or suede shirt will work. Paste paper or flannel fringe to cuffs and necklines, and glue beads everywhere.
-
Step 4
Recycle a dress, jumper or long skirt, preferably made of wool or pseudo-suede.
-
Step 5
Decorate an old leather or beaded belt with feathers, fringe and cloth ropes; or find fabric strips and tie them round your waist to make your dress fit.
-
Step 6
Make lots of macaroni and cranberry necklaces and bracelets; braided jewelry is great, too.
-
Step 7
Collect old thread spools and string them on yarn for a necklace.
-
Step 8
Pull big old brown socks over regular shoes and lace your calves with leather strips for easy, comfy moccasins.

on 7/22/2009 I hate poor grammar and spelling. Hoe on earth did you even write an article? Why go on a 'How to create a Pocahontas costume' site just to slate it? Get a life. Make a dress for yourself or kids to play in or don't look on this site. Yes Disney reinforces and in some cases establishes stereotypes - so do lots of companies and types of media. Of course parents should help educate their kids about racism, classism, sexism and self worth but while they are still kids - and that doesn't seem to last too long these days - maybe we should let them have some fun too.

on 12/24/2008 We dont wear costumes... SEE MY ARTICLE "how to recognize the steriotypes of the first nations!"
First off if we were pochanhauntas we'd be dead.
Today Pochanhautas name calling to a native is a put down....
No such thing as princesses that was from england and the royalty was given to daughters of leaders :(
I HATE STERIOTYPES!

on 10/10/2007 Wow, you're both being pretty hard on Lee Vest. OMG, don't show your ignorance by calling somebody who is concerned about racism "stuck up." How would you feel if the little white kids in your neighborhood wanted to dress up as slaves? Did you ever hear of that now banned Disney movie "Song of the South?" You can't buy it in the U.S. anymore. Disney doesn't care about educating our kids, it's about the cash flow. And do you notice something similar in all Disney movies? The females are stacked and pretty, just like a bunch of Barbie/Bratz dolls. Helpless, waiting for their prince to save them. Maybe we should teach our girls at a young age how to get an eating disorder so that they too can look like Hollywood's version of all women. Get smart. Teach your children racism, sexism and classism early! You can proudly show off your little darlings and tell everyone what a good job you did.

on 10/2/2007 Pocahontas costumes have been made for years. You can't stop people from watching a Disney Movie that was made over 10 years ago. Kids love movies that are about real people but made to be fake and fun for kids. Nobody other than Lee Vest cares about how Disney makes movies fun for kids. Disney likes to help kids learn about the past and help them see how Pocahontas lived and what they did to catch food. I love to watch that movie but I know that parts aren't real but it is still fun to watch. People don't complain about kindergardeners around Thanksgiving when the kids dress up like the Indians and wear paper headbands with paper feathers and bead and buttons. Nobody really wants to hear about this stuff when they have kids that like the movie. (this comment is for Lee Vest)
