There is a proper technique to lifting free weights and if it is done improperly, injuries that could persist for several years could arise. Wearing a weight belt helps minimize the risk of injuries to those who lift with free weights. It is often thought by athletes that the presence of the weight belt allows her to increase the amount of weight she can safely lift. The support comes from increased abdominal pressure provided by the belt. This increased abdominal pressure provides additional support for the spine, thus allowing you to lift heavier weights. The increased abdominal pressure creates less pressure on the spine therefore protecting the vertebrae and discs. It is also commonly understood that weightlifting belts aid proper form during the lifting process.
Things You'll Need
- Weight lifting belt
- Comfortable T-shirt (work-out T-shirt)
- Comfortable shorts or pants (work-out shorts or pants)
Wear comfortable gym or workout shorts. You want to wear shorts that are soft to the skin and comfortable. The weight lifting belt will eventually go over your clothes, not against your skin.
Wear cotton gym and work out T-shirt. Do not wear silk or slippery material. The weight lifting belt, in order to do its job, must hold your mid-section securely. If you wear a silky material T-shirt, it will cause the weight lifting belt to slip and not properly support your back and neck.
Put the belt around your waist just above your hips. You want to be able to buckle the belt just over the center of your navel. Secure the weight lifting belt tightly. If it is too lose, it will not properly support your back. If it is too tight, you will experience great discomfort. The belt should be snug and you should be able to just squeeze a finger under it.
