How to Remove a Yaris Shift Knob

The Toyota Yaris was introduced in 2007; it replaced the Echo as Toyota's sub-compact offering. Both the Yaris sedan and hatchback use the same shift knob, which makes removal the same for both models. Although the knob is different between manual and automatic transmissions, the process for removing them is the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your Yaris in park, or neutral if it is a manual transmission. Engage the parking brake and turn the engine off.

    • 2

Hold on to the gear selector base to avoid moving it out of position (manual transmission only). Grasp the shift knob and twist it counterclockwise.

    • 3

Continue twisting the shift knob until it unscrews from the base. Installation is the reverse of removal. (Twist it clockwise.)

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble, wrap a small towel around the knob to get a better grip.

  • Don't remove the shift knob with the engine running, or while the vehicle is out of park (automatic transmission) or neutral (manual transmission).
