As the number of viruses and malware increases on the net, our computers face much more danger than in the past. One way to ensure that your computer remains virus-free is to perform a full system scan. Even though virus attacks are rare for Macs, it is still recommended to run full system scans to make sure everything is running fine. Simply put, the dangers are not worth the risk. Run a full system scan to protect your computer and prevent damage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Close out of all programs and windows. Running programs and browser windows will tend to slow the scanning process down.

  2. Step 2

On a PC, go to the "Control Panel" and select "Windows Defender." Click "Tools" on the top toolbar. Select a time and frequency of when you would like to perform the scan. Choose "Full Scan" under "Type" then click "Save" when you are done.

  3. Step 3

Click "Scan" on the top toolbar. Windows Defender will now scan your entire computer. This process can take as long as thirty minutes depending on how many files are on your hard drive.

  4. Step 4

FOr Macs, download a system scanner. One program is called ClamXav (see Resources for links). Download and install version 1.1.1 then click "Start Scan" to begin scanning.

  5. Step 5

View the scan results. Restart your computer upon completion of the scan.
