A job search in a tough economy can be hard enough, but getting a job offer can be even more challenging. There are some tricks to getting and accepting a good job offer. Preparation is key to getting the best job offer possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know the job pay scale before starting the job search

Do job search research to find out what a job will pay in your area - job salaries might have fallen with this economy. Salary.com and payscale.com are only two sites where you can input job titles and regions of the country to find out the pay scale.

  2. Step 2

Get a job by preparing the best resume

Spend time creating and updating your resume. Make SURE there's not even ONE small typo as attention to detail is very necessary, especially in a tough job market. Stand out from the crowd and print our resume on the best quality paper you can find. Remember, a professional resume may move you to the top of the line with other interviewees.

  3. Step 3

Find work by presenting your best self at the interview

Even if you believe the job is 'beneath' you, arrive groomed and dressed professionally for the interview. Present yourself as though you're, by far, the best job candidate. Be honest during the interview with your strengths and your weaknesses. Listen to questions carefully before responding. Don't just say what you think the employer wants to hear - be honest with them and yourself.

  4. Step 4

If you receive a job offer which is low, negotiate vacation

Understand that vacation is ALWAYS negotiable, even if you've been told otherwise. Getting an extra week may make taking a lower paying job more worth your while.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow up each interview with a handwritten thank you card to each person you talked to, including the person who scheduled the interview
  • Present yourself honestly - this will help you keep that job opportunity once it's given to you.
