Things You'll Need:
- Wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Valve cover gaskets
- Gasket sealer
-
Step 1
Remove the four retaining bolts that secure each valve cover to its cylinder head with a wrench and lift the covers off the cylinder heads. Two retaining bolts are at the top lip of each cover, and the remaining two bolts are at the bottom lip of each cover.
-
Step 2
Peal the old valve cover gasket off the cover and clean the surface of the valve cover, where the gasket fits into the cover, with the blade of a flat-head screwdriver. Cleaning the gasket's mating surface will ensure that the new gasket seals properly.
-
Step 3
Locate each rocker arm's adjusting nut. The tip of each rocker arm rests on top of its respective valve and is what actuates the valve. In the center of the rocker arm is a single nut. It is this nut that determines how the valve is adjusted.
-
Step 4
Turn the engine on and, while the engine is idling, slowly turn one rocker arm's adjusting nut counterclockwise with a wrench until a tapping sound is produced, then tighten the nut just until the sound stops.
-
Step 5
Turn the adjusting nut in a clockwise direction one full turn with the wrench to complete the adjustment. Repeat the process for the remaining valves and turn the engine off.
-
Step 6
Cover one side of a replacement valve cover gasket with gasket sealer and press the coated side of the gasket onto the inner lip of the valve cover. Apply gasket sealer to the other side of the valve cover gasket and place the cover onto the cylinder head. Install the cover's retaining bolts with a wrench and allow at least one hour to pass for the gasket sealer to dry. Install the remaining valve cover in the same manner to complete the process.
