Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window and double this measurement (this will give you enough fabric to create the sag in the middle of the valance). Add 1 yard for tying the scarf valance on the left side of the window and 1 yard for tying the scarf valance on the right side of the window. Add all three numbers together to determine the length of the valance. The width of the valance should be approximately 25 inches.

    • 2

Select a ready-made scarf that fits your décor or make a scarf out of fabric. If you are using fabric, make a half-inch hem around all four sides of the fabric to create a finished look.

    • 3

Install the curtain rod if necessary. Make sure the curtain rod is positioned 2 to 3 inches higher than the upper window frame and extends past the window approximately 3 inches on each side.

    • 4

Find the center point of the scarf valance and place a small pin there to mark it.

    • 5

Climb the ladder (if necessary) and hold the center of the fabric at the center point of the window for positioning purposes. Drape both ends of the scarf valance over the curtain rod. Remove the marking pin.

    • 6

Arrange the scarf valance along the rod so that it is visually pleasing. Make sure you center the valance along the rod and over the window and the fabric looks the way you want it to look.

    • 7

Loop the left end of the scarf valance around the rod again. Tie the fabric around the curtain rod in a large, loose, decorative knot resembling a rosebud. Make sure you keep the knot where you want it on the curtain rod. Repeat this process on the right side.

    • 8

Step back and assess the scarf valance. Make sure it is symmetrical and even.
