Sarcoptic mange, or scabies, is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin and causes severe itching. The mite is transferred through direct contact with an infected person or animal. Treatment for scabies is accomplished through one application of a specially formulated medication.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eurax
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Vacuum
  • Laundry soap
  1. Step 1

Use a medication that is prescribed by the doctor. Sometimes over-the-counter medications may not cure the infection with one application as Eurax usually does, which is a prescription. The Eurax comes in a lotion and a cream.

  2. Step 2

Take a shower and dry off thoroughly. The skin must be dry to apply Eurax. Allow the skin time to cool from a hot shower.

  3. Step 3

Place all dirty clothes, sheets and towels in a black garbage bag and tie to close. You should leave the bag closed for at least three to four days before opening and washing. Bagging your clothes and bedding will prevent the infection from reoccurring.

  4. Step 4

Apply Eurax from the neck down because scabies does not affect the head or face. Apply to arms, legs, stomach, back and feet. Leave this medication on for eight hours. Do not rub the skin or wash. Put on loose clothes that will not rub on the skin.

  5. Step 5

Vacuum beds, furniture, carpets and pet beds. Scrub wood and vinyl floors. Make sure to clean mattresses and flip couch cushions to clean underneath.

  6. Step 6

After eight hours, wash the body with soap and water.

  7. Step 7

Wash bedding and clothes that were bagged after they have sat for the required time. Wash the clothes in hot water and dry in the dryer. If possible, do not use a public laundry facility.
